Really. I have no idea. I always thought that boldingp and italicizing certain words just took away from what you were trying to say.
And it also deceives a lot of people.
I read a poem on Fictionpress once that was like this:
fingers screaming/streaming && she screams LILLITH LILLITH and plunges her fingers into the apple
Or something like that. And it was really a pile of nonsense, but it got mad reviews that were full of people saying "nice words! I love your formatting!"
It just always confused me.

I dunno, I think I've only done that once that I can remember, but it worked and I only italicized a certain phrase. I personally don't really mind it since I only pay attention to the words anyway. I suppose they use them as tools for emphasis in some places.

thats what i always thought. just bringing more emphasis to certain parts that the writers proud of or feels like it needs to be brought out more.

Its a stylistic representation of imagery, basically. And just what cookie said, brings more emphasis to certain parts, just like EE Cummings used in his works by ajoining words. I believe if it is done right it just fine, the authors own opinion, but over done it can be quite horrid. I believe it is a personal thing.

Personal thing, yeah.
Like avatars. You don't need them, but it makes you feel cool to have them.

Especially when you make your own.
I didn't make this one, but it always makes me feel special to make a really sweet avatar.

I don't like bolding and colours in poems however italics do come in use as well as s p a c i n g.. it creates a certain emphasis that I appreciate in certain poems

Well, italics, of course, as long as you don't put them in totally weird places where they don't belong. Italics are a lot more professional than capitalizing the words you want to emphasis.

i think capitalizing words looks silly and usually ends up ruining the piece, no matter what it's content is.
