This is a story I'm working on for Neopets (click here if you don't know what that it, because I totally understand it if you don't)
'Tis Bad Luck to Have a Woman on Board
Taelia’s beautiful raven black hair billowed even indoors; her icy dome couldn’t keep all the wind out. It had grown colder and as a result she had had to ask more villagers to help her with errands she’d rather do herself. The winter faerie wondered exactly what spell to use next when a girl of fifteen years came trotting in. Taelia cringed as the snow on the girl’s boots was packed into her floor.
“Hello Miss Taelia,” The girl curtsied clumsily, “How are you?”
“I’m doing well, Rosa, Joe is in good health I trust?”
“He’s doing fine. Do you need me to get you anything?”
Taelia turned around so the girl wouldn’t see the look of sadness on her face. It was time to disclose the letter and Taelia knew what that meant. Pulling herself back to reality she stepped forward and handed Rosa a hastily-written scroll of parchment; a list including four items for the girl to find for her. Rosa thanked Taelia and set to work on retrieving the items.
She headed over to Mike and Caressa’s where a constant garage sale was held. Past the crowd of nine or ten she squeezed into the back of the couple’s igloo. She presented them with a toy she had snatched from the ice-ager, “I need some items for Taelia.” She then leaned in and whispered in Mike’s ear that Taelia had acted like it was urgent. Both of the Chia were off like rockets to find the items on the list. After an hour of haggling, searching through storage and eventually bartering Rosa had all four items on the list.
“Thank you so much! I hope you make it to the Tropics!” She shouted back at the couple as she left for Taelia’s home.
She chuckled to herself that the point of all the garage sales they held was so that eventually they could move to a warmer climate while everyone knew they never would. Rosa, knowing she was ahead of the time Taelia had set for her to find the items, skipped all the way there. The faerie, however, didn’t seem happy to see her. Her bangs were drooped over her oval-shaped face and her features were slack.
“I brought you everything you asked for; may I?-” Rosa asked hesitantly.
Taelia nodded her head, “I’ll get the mail for Joe and a coupon for you.”
She swept across the room and gathered up a few envelopes and let the wind carry them into Rosa’s outstretched hands. The girl gave a small ‘good-bye’ since she was unsure of what else there was to say, pushed all the envelopes into the pack hanging on her right shoulder and left.
Snowballs flew in every direction as well as fistfuls of slush. A Mynci by the name of Carl stepped up over his fort and called out to Rosa, “Come on Rosa! You’re our best player!” She laughed but shook her head. She couldn’t say anything either for fear she’d tell them she had come from Taelia’s because then they would mob her, begging her for her ice cream coupon.
She finally came to a shop with a small sign hanging over it, proclaiming, ‘Wintry Petpets!’ She went around the back and found a small key under the mat. Rosa fumbled with it for several minutes before opening up the door. A large Bruce with a scarf of white and green came waddling into the back with a cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows allowing Rosa to forget all about her journey up to Terror Mountain for a moment.
“Thank you, Joe. There’s some mail today in my pack.” She let the pack slip from her shoulder to the floor.
Joe bent down and picked out a few things he called ‘junk’ and then gasped at the second-to-last letter. Rosa laughed and pulled it out of his hands. That was her ice cream coupon. The Bruce sighed (he thought that was his!) and reviewed the next envelope; now this one was different. Its color was a powdery blue and it had a golden seal stamped onto the back. He made no time in unraveling it and reading the letter but once he did he regretted it. Slumping over to one of the two small cots in the back room he sat down heavily.
“What is it? You look just like Taelia when she handed it to me.” Rosa stood on tiptoe as if this would help her see the letter any better as it was being put away.
“She probably already knew what was in here.” He shrugged. “Faerie instincts I suppose.”
“Well? What does it say?!” She’d been curious long enough!
“It’s your aunt: she wants you to go to Krawk Island.” Joe leaned back onto the cot, letting a frown sit comfortably on his beak.
“What? That’s impossible! Since when did she start caring about me?” Rosa’s eyes revealed bitter resentment.
“Since now, I guess. Look at the bright side: maybe you’ll like the change.” Joe sat up briefly and tried to put on an optimistic smile.
Rosa dragged her pack along the ground while she walked over to her cot. She dumped herself into the cot and gave a heavy sigh; how could someone ask her to leave Happy Valley? It had been her home for so many years now! Joe had always been a kindhearted caretaker and she had always loved helping him out with the shop and fostering the Petpets they sold. And as she recalled her aunt had refused to take her; what did she want with her now?
“Do I have any other choice?” Rosa set herself down so that she too was lying on her bed, staring at the ceiling in hopes of finding answers.
“I only wish I could keep you here, but the letter included a pass for voyage on the ‘Saint Katherine’. It has the names of the crew if you want to look-”
“That’s alright.”
The young girl felt restless so she lit a candle and let the dancing light lead her to the front of the store, where the kennels rested. There were about four Petpets under their care at the moment and as she suspected the Faellie was just as restless as she was. She knew at least one of them would be. As she heard Joe bumble about and retrieve his nightcap she brought the Faellie into her arms and began to rock it to sleep.
“At least you have a chance to have a good owner; I’m going to live with my mean old aunt.” She pressed her finger to its nose and the Faellie gave a soft giggling noise.
For a little while that was all she did, talk to the Faellie and watch the candlelight sink lower and lower until both of them were too tired to go on. Rosa yawned and gave the Faellie a kiss atop the head before gently setting it back into its cage. Then, taking the stub of a candle in her hand she knocked at the door that lead to the back. Joe sleepily opened it and let her in.
Too exhausted to think of anything else Rosa slipped under her covers and fell into a deep sleep. As if in a flash she was woken up by sunlight pouring into her bed through the window. She put her pillow over her head and groaned.
“None of that; today we set off for the shore. The boat can’t make its way up here, you know.” The Bruce laughed at the thought.
“We’re going to hike to the shore!” Rosa opened her eyes, now wide awake.
Her hands tied a rope around a large boulder recklessly, they were numb from the cold. With that she waved her arms to clear Joe. He climbed down and shouted, “There it is!” Rosa could almost spread her wings and fly to the shore she was so happy! She’d been climbing down the mountain all day and her entire body was stiff from use. As she tightened the rope and began to climb down, pack at her right side, she too could begin to spot the shore. Despite the thought of her aunt this just might be what she needed and very suddenly she felt like shouting, “Shiver me timbers!” as she spotted the ship. On closer inspection she decided she’d rather not.
“Make yer move ya yellow-bellied skunk of a-” An old and sinister looking Kyrii rattled on until the game board was thrown onto the poop deck along with many other things as the ship came to an abrupt stop.
The boat had reached the snowy banks of Terror Mountain. Many of the crew had been jostled by the stop and were now standing up, rubbing their heads. The Skieth opposite him laughed long and hard.
“I was losing anyhow…”
In the crew of misfits standing up dizzily there were a peg-legged Techo, a sickeningly grey blue Shoyru, and a boy who looked to be about seventeen. Flying towards the snowy banks was a determined Eyrie who had two Jetsam brothers toss him a wooden board for everyone else to walk down. Along with the sinister-looking captain and his equally sinister first mate a Spyder scuffled down the board in front of the rest.
Joe had just put his foot down onto the shores as well as Rosa when the Skieth took a look at the girl, “This the lass?”
Rosa was rudely hoisted over the Skieth’s shoulder (her trusty pack full of luggage still at her side) and carried back up the board and onto the ship. Joe looked in horror as she was carried around like a limp doll. She would’ve struggled but what was the point when you’re on the shoulder of something five times your size?
“Joe! I’ll miss yooouu!” She cried as she was tossed into the captain’s quarters.
A/N: So? What did you think of it? I'm open to any critisism or ideas you have for it.
