Lightning crashed as thunder boomed overhead. The source of the pouring rain outside Anna's window couldn't have been more than a mile away. And that rustling in the bushes wasn't in someone else's property. When this happened in her dreams, the next thing Anna knew the hottie she'd had a crush on for at least two years, Devon, would come out of the bushes. He is so dreamy, Anna thought to herself once again. With those perfect baby blue eyes, almost shoulder length perfect surfer-kind-of-dirty blonde hair. Slightly wavy, not curly, yet not straight. But who am I kidding. A perfect little angel of a goody two shoes could never get a punk-rocker-skater like him, so why even try. But then again who could resist that smile. I mean sure it's an "I'm so cool smile," but it's still the best thing in the world. Anna kept daydreaming about those perfect, pale, thing lips, gently moving closer to hers. Everything around them would disappear. It would be her lips against his, just standing there in his arms. Then, as she snapped back to reality, it was her daydream again. It was Devon coming out of the bush. She couldn't believe it. She painfully pinched herself, so she knew it was real. He reached for a rock to throw at her window. He has perfect timing, too. He must like know my parents schedule. I mean they left yesterday. I told you he was perfect. She stopped her daydreaming when she heard the rock against her window. Not wanting to seem eager, she let him throw another one. Finally, Anna slowly walked to her window. She opened it.
"Hello?" she asked with fake sleepiness.
"Anna? It's me Devon."
"DEVON?” she screamed as loud as a whisper would let her, throwing in the fact that she was "surprised".
"Yes, Devon. I have to tell you something."
"Hang on. Throw me the ladder on the playhouse." She'd used this exit many times before. Gracefully catching the rope ladder, she pulled over the playhouse, grabbing it just before it slammed into the window. Gently placing the plastic down, she climbed out, slowly but skillfully.
"You've done that before haven't you?" Devon asked with a smile.
"Once or twice," Anna replied with a wink. "Now what'd you have to tell me?" she asked.
Already knowing the night would go well.
"First, come with me to my favorite ice cream place, and I'll tell you over a shake," Devon commanded, in that perfect way Anna loved. Not to bossy, but I'll know what he wants me to do, she started daydreaming again. Once they got there, Devon ordered their shakes, and they grabbed a table.
"This is cute. Very ... retro. I’m surprised it’s open this late. What time is it anyway?" Anna commented.
"I know isn't it great? And it’s about 10:30. Okay, but what I have to tell you is ...." Devon trailed off.
"Well go on. You know you can tell me anything," Anna comforted, a huge grin in her head, trying to bust it's way out.
"Well," he began, "I know you've liked me for a while and..."
"And?" Anna urged, just waiting to hear it. Those wonderful four words, "I like you too." But who was she kidding. Anna was surprised Devon even knew her name, and she expected him to like her?
"I like you too," he blurted out. Not even trying to stop herself Anna slid over to his side of their round booth, and embraced him in a huge hug.
"I know this is kind of rushing things," he said, her arms still tightly around him. Hearing this, Anna lightened her grip.
"But would you go steady with me?" he asked, uncertain of himself.
"Yes, yes, YES!" Anna exclaimed without thinking. "I mean I would love that." Slowly, just like in her daydream, their lips moved closer and closer. When they were almost touching, the waitress came whizzing up on her skates. “Here are your shakes,” she said, purposely ruining their moment. Quickly coming back to reality, Devon thanked her and gave her the money. “Where were we?” he asked, encasing her in a hug, his lips automatically on hers. Devon and Anna didn’t hold back at all, though they were in the middle of a half-full diner with all eyes on them, and they knew it too. Still, both seventeen-year-olds were now happily in love and just expressing their excitement and passion for each other. Who could blame them?
When they finally stopped kissing, everyone started clapping. The two red-cheeked teenagers looked around embarrassed. All eyes really were on them, and neither was used to it. Soon everyone went back to their food, and Anna and Devon went back to each other.
“That was amazing,” Anna finally, slowly said.
“We could go back to your house and re-enact it?” Devon said with a sly smile.
“Let’s go,” Anna said grinning.

When they noisily walked into Anna’s house, Anna remembered her (hopefully sleeping) 7-year-old brother, Kevin.
“Oh, shit!” Devon whispered.
“What’s wrong?” Anna asked with concern.
“My brother’s at home alone as well.”
“Oh, well can he get himself up and ready in the morning?”
“Let’s hope so. Wait, how will he get to school?”
“There’s a bus stop at the end of our driveway.”
“Do you want to go over to your house after this, or will your brother be fine?”
“He’ll be fine. Let’s go see your brother.”
Quickly telling Devon to be quiet and follow her, Anna tiptoed up to her brother’s room.
“You’re in trouble!” he said, bouncing on his bed when she walked in.
“What do you want now?” Anna asked stubbornly.
“Who’s the guy?”
“My friend, Devon. Is that all you want?”
“Are you sure he just your friend?”
‘Why do you care?”
“‘Cuz Mom said you couldn’t have any boys over. ‘Specially you boyfriend. So you’re in TROUBLE!”
“How about I give you five dollars and you don’t mention any of this?” Devon cut in.
“Never mind, Na. I like Devon. Keep him here, I promise I won’t say anything.”
“Devon are you sure?”
“Ya, it’s fine,” he said. Then lowering his voice said, “Plus, now we’ll have some privacy.”
“Kevin, go back to bed. I’ll wake you up for school in the morning.”
When she saw him lay back down, Devon and Anna went downstairs. Cuddling up on the couch, they were finally alone. Anna knew they’d end up doing exactly what they were in the diner, but this time they were alone. His lips were moving closer to hers again, and once again Anna was in heaven.
~
When I woke up in the morning, Anna was still on the couch right next to Devon.
“Devon, wake up. We have to go to school,” she said, gently rubbing his back.
“What? Where am I?” he sleepily asked as he woke up.
“You’re at my house. You fell asleep here last night. We have to go to school.” she replied.
“Oh yah. I remember. What am I going to wear? Won’t people suspect something if we walk into school together and I still have on my clothes from yesterday?’ he said, realizing he had no clothes.
“You mean you don’t carry and extra outfit with you at all times? How can you live?” Anna asked him jokingly.
“Of course not,” he said finally awake, and gave me a kiss.
“You can wear my brother’s clothes,” she said remembering her brother John didn’t bring everything when he went to college.
“There’s a little bit of a size difference,” Devon remarked, not knowing she had a brother one year older.
“Oh sorry. I have a brother, John, who started college this year, and he left some of his clothes here that might fit you,” Anna explained.
“Okay, where’s his stuff?”
“I’ll show you his old room after we wake up Kevin.”
“Okay. Let’s go,” Devon said in that not to commanding perfect way he has.
Leading him through the kitchen to go up the stairs, we saw Kevin sitting at the counter, eating Lucky Charms.
“’Bout time you woke up,” he teased.
“Kevin what are you doing up? What time is it?”
“It’s 7:30. I usually wake up at 7:00 and my school starts in 45 minutes but you need to drive me there in 20 minutes ‘cuz I promised Mike I’d get there early.”
“Wait, what color hair does Mike have?” Devon asked.
“Blond, lots like yours. He has the same color eyes as you too.”
“That’s because he’s my little brother.”
“Oh, that makes sense now. Ain’t that funny Anna. Devon’s little brother is my bestest and onlyest friend.”
“Kevin, don’t say ain’t. And its best and only friend not bestest and onlyest, an I’m surprised you have any friends,” Anna corrected.
“Hey that’s not nice. You two better hurry up and get dressed or I’m gunna be late.”
“You’re right. Devon follow me,” Anna gently commanded.
When they got to John’s room, Anna apologized for the lack of style. She also apologized for having to go take a shower. 25 minutes later, Anna and Devon were finally ready, with Kevin yelling at them because they were 5 minutes late. When they got to Kevin’s school, Mike was waiting for him outside.
