As he sipped a glass of whiskey
swirling the dark malt in the crystal glass he loved
he looked up from the window and whispered
"I'm restless"
I told him "Go do something"
and he told me
"I might just"
so he stood up and put on his cowboy hat
and walked out the door
damn, he never looked back
as he went
I watched him go
a familiar enough motion
it's all been done before
When he came back, he poured another shot of whiskey
swirled the glass between his hands
he sat down and said, "I'm tired"
I was burning with questions but pride filled my throat
and he said nothing more
"Then go to bed," I told him
"I might just" he said
and he looked at me strangely
and stretched out on the bed
his cowboy hat still on tight
and the whiskey still painting a sheen on his mouth
I ached to kiss it away
but what could I do?
he didn't say anything to me
He woke up this morning
(I'd sat up all night watching him)
and said, "I'm hungry"
God, how I wanted to be what he hungered for
but he looked away
so I swallowed my tongue
and told him "So eat something"
and he glanced at me and back down
I thought I saw something
but the whiskey he poured and downed
drowned it out if it was even there
he got up, cowboy hat still on,
and said, "I might just"
walked out the door
another damn time
I cried as I watched him go
He was gone all day
and I drank half his whiskey
in the glass he always held so carefully
as I watched, wishing it was me he held
I was almost drunk when I looked up
he was leaning against the doorway
watching me
a familiar enough motion, I guess
and there were tears in his eyes
that damn man still had on his cowboy hat
I love him when he cries for me
"I'm hurting" I whispered
"Then love me" he said
He'd been gone so long from me
and I just smiled and finished my drink
and said, "I might just"
swirling the dark malt in the crystal glass he loved
he looked up from the window and whispered
"I'm restless"
